Come & Save Me
Cast & Crew
Overview: From the creators of Electric Jesus, Come and Save Me is a mesmerizing short music-film co-produced by Cargo and Studio 15. Directed by Chris White and featuring the musical talents of Danielson, the film stars Fred Armisen as Hugo, a lonely man drawn out of his self-imposed exile by nine magical fruits and the music of Danielson. With additional performances by Andi Marie Tillman, this whimsical and heartfelt film delves deep into themes of community, loneliness, hope, and the transformative power of music.
Inspiration and Evolution: The concept for Come and Save Me emerged from Chris White’s desire to expand the world of his film Electric Jesus. Inspired by its rich thematic layers, White envisioned a short film that would explore the intersection of music, community, and faith in a unique and visually arresting way. Recognizing the project’s potential and the need for high-caliber production and post-production talent, White approached David Estrada to help bring the vision to life. With Estrada's background in producing commercial videos and films, he collaborated with White to ensure the project’s success at every stage. After speaking with Daniel Smith of Danielson, and discovering that the song Come and Save Me, from the Electric Jesus soundtrack, utilized lyrics that had been written by the late Christian Rock pioneer Larry Norman, the team knew the track was the perfect fit for the project.
Estrada's Role in the Production: As an executive producer/producer on Come and Save Me, Estrada's responsibilities extended across multiple facets of the production process:
-
- Securing Funding: He pitched the project to the executive leadership team at Cargo, highlighting the creative and commercial potential of the film. Once Cargo was on board, he negotiated and drafted the agreement between Studio 15 and Cargo, structuring a mutually beneficial partnership for both entities.
-
- Assembling the Team: He curated a team of talented department heads for both production and post-production. This included leads for locations, camera, art, on-location sound, visual effects and animation, sound design and mixing, color grading, mastering, and versioning.
-
- Pre-Production Leadership: Under Estrada's management, the team at Cargo created stunning 3D environments that were used during filming. Leveraging cutting-edge technology, they employed a virtual set with a Volume stage, which allowed them to immerse the cast in a variety of dynamic, computer-generated environments. This innovative setup enabled seamless integration of Unreal Engine-powered camera movements and set extensions.
-
- Creative Direction: Estrada provided creative direction for the design of the pitch book used by the casting director to secure Mr. Armisen’s participation. The pitch book was helpful in presenting the film’s vision and securing top-tier talent for the project. However, it can't go unsaid that Danielson's personal connection to Mr. Armisen is what allowed the deal to happen.
-
- Behind-the-Scenes Documentary: In addition to Estrada's production responsibilities, he directed, produced, and filmed a behind-the-scenes documentary, The Making of Come and Save Me. This documentary features interviews with Fred Armisen, Mike Norman, Danielson, and representatives from the South Carolina Film Commission, offering an intimate look at the creative and technical processes behind the film.
Technical Innovation: One of the standout aspects of Come and Save Me is its groundbreaking use of virtual production technology. The majority of the film was shot on a Volume stage, which allowed the cast to interact with richly detailed 3D environments projected in real-time. This technology not only elevated the film’s visual storytelling but also provided creative flexibility for complex camera movements and scene transitions. Additional plates were shot to create set extensions for the theater scenes, further enhancing the film’s immersive quality.
Thematic Depth: At its core, Come and Save Me is a poignant exploration of how modern society has become increasingly isolated due to technology and work. The film portrays Hugo’s journey from loneliness to connection, underscoring the importance of community and human interaction. Through its narrative, the film invites viewers to reflect on themes such as:
-
- Community and Loneliness: How technology and societal pressures can lead to isolation and the longing for meaningful connections.
-
- Hope and Redemption: The transformative power of music and the belief in a brighter future.
-
- Religious and Spiritual Undertones: The idea of being "saved" by someone or something, and the desire to share this salvation with others. The film also encourages acceptance within religious communities, promoting inclusivity and love for all.
-
- Music as a Unifying Force: How music transcends barriers and brings people together, offering solace and inspiration.
Production Highlights: Those stand-out moments.
-
- Fred Armisen as Hugo: Known for his unique comedic and dramatic talents, Armisen delivers a compelling performance as the film’s central character.
-
- Music by Danielson: Featuring the song “Come and Save Me,” with music by Daniel Smith and lyrics by Larry Norman, the film’s soundtrack serves as both a narrative driver and an emotional anchor.
-
- Andi Marie Tillman: Not only is she truly hilarious, but amazing to work with and a deeply kind individual.
-
- Collaborative Effort: The partnership between Cargo and Studio 15 ensured a seamless production process, with each entity contributing their expertise to achieve a shared vision.
Come and Save Me is more than just a short music-film—it’s a heartfelt meditation on the human condition. By blending innovative technology with deeply resonant themes, the film captures the magic of storytelling through music and cinema. For Estrada, as a producer, this project was a fulfilling opportunity to collaborate with incredible talent, push the boundaries of virtual production, and contribute to a story that inspires hope and connection.
